Fight Clubs
Tyler Durden: “Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy stuff we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact.”
Jesus says those who follow him are in the midst of a war in which they have been commanded to fight; to fight against sin and for joy; to fight for truth in our own lives and in the lives of others. We don’t fight alone.
We do this together in Fight Clubs. In groups of 2-3 we hammer the grace of God into our heart until it determines who we are. We are uncomfortably honest with our struggles because we hate sin and love Jesus. We get off our Christian “island” and invite others in; to push back on us, encourage us, and challenge us as iron violently sharpening iron. We allow others into our brokenness because it pushes us to depend on the gospel. We get serious about God’s Word and stop piddling around with TV and the internet and dive into the blood-stained, revealed Word of God. We see God’s Spirit transform us as we consistently look for Jesus in the Scriptures. We pray for lost friends and see God save them as we purposefully weave them into our lives and mission.
Jesus fought, died, and rose to destroy the enemies that are killing you, and he’s calling you to join the fight.
There will be no sign up sheet. No one is going to check up on you and see if you are in a Fight Club. Fight Clubs are purely organic and totally up to you. How you meet, where, or when is all your responsibility. The only thing that matters is that you study the scripture together, identify sin, fight sin, and kill it by the power of the Gospel.
3 RULES
1. Know your sin
2. Fight your sin
3. Trust in your Savior
They are same-gendered, with 2-3 people in the group. If someone else wants in, let them come for a week to see how it works and then split. Fight the fight of faith, and fight well.
Ask around your City Group about starting or joining one.
