The Paradox at First Christian Church

Because of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held every four years, we will be meeting at First Christian Church (FCC), for three straight weeks starting May 26th with one service being held at 9am.FCC is the oldest church in Fort Worth and, if you have been there for a service or wedding you know, it is a beautiful, historic building. As we toured the building, myself, Pastor Ryan, and Matt got excited about thinking of all our people, in one service together, worshiping Jesus in one place—and a beautiful place at that. It got me thinking.Why does beauty stir us? Why does something big—whether it is a building, the ocean, a mountain range, whatever it might be—why does it move us? John Calvin would refer to all of creation as a "dazzling theater". That all beauty and vastness, all of creation, is a stage God has set up to display His glory and goodness to us.For the three weeks we are at FCC we will have a three-week sermon series entitled, The Theater of God. As we gather in a great, historic, beautiful church building, we will marvel at God’s theater—His great work—creation, and the great drama He has written. We will also look at the Hero of the story, and finally, at our response as both the audience and bit players.As we consider this "dazzling theater" and its Playwright, let us also serve as the adornment: God’s people, a living orchestra to His glory and grace for all those that might join us, and for the mutual encouragement of one another:
