The Sacred Has Absorbed The Secular

Spurgeon once said, "the sacred has absorbed the secular". Our upcoming series called, "Rhythms", hopes to show and teach you that the Christian life is not segmented into "sacred" things - bible reading, prayer, church events - and "secular" - work, hobbies, family, meals, etc. But that all of life is lived as worship unto Christ who is Lord over all. Abraham Kuyper famously said, "There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, 'Mine!'”.  In addition, discipleship, as well as mission - telling people about Jesus - are not sacred activities we add to our secular lives, but what happens when the Gospel has changed us and informs everything we do

You housemaids, you cooks, you nurses, you ploughmen, you housewives, you traders, you sailors, your labor is holy if you serve the Lord Christ in it..." - C. H. Spurgeon

So ministry, discipleship, and mission are not just for pastors or church leaders, they are for the stay-at-home mom, the hardworking dad, the college student, the hopeful musician, and the entrepreneur. We will look at resting, listening, working, eating, celebrating, blessing, our lives formed by our stories and those around us, and recreating - or participating in art and hobbies; and we will look at all of these rhythms that every culture, in every time, takes part in from a biblical perspective seeing that, in all of them, the Sacred - Jesus - has absorbed the secular.

"To a man who lives unto God nothing is secular, everything is sacred. He puts on his workday garment and it is a vestment to him. He sits down to his meal and it is a sacrament. He goes forth to his labor, and therein exercises the office of the priesthood. His breath is incense and his life a sacrifice. He sleeps on the bosom of God, and lives and moves in the divine presence.

The Lord hath cleansed your houses, he has cleansed your bed chambers, your tables, your shops, he has made the bells upon your horses holiness to the Lord, he has made the common pots and pans of your kitchens to be as the bowls before the altar, if you know what you are and live according to your high calling. You housemaids, you cooks, you nurses, you ploughmen, you housewives, you traders, you sailors, your labor is holy if you serve the Lord Christ in it, by living unto him as you ought to live. The sacred has absorbed the secular." - C. H. Spurgeon, "All for Jesus"
